ADOT closing highways in White Mountains for winter

SHOW LOW – Drivers who travel through Arizona’s high country need to be aware of some annual road closures as the winter season begins. Several highways in the White Mountains are closed each season due to the significant amount of snowfall and are reopened in the spring, usually around mid-April, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

State Route 473 to Hawley Lake will be closed Wednesday, (Nov. 30).

State Route 261 between Big Lake and five miles south of State Route 260 will be closed Dec. 19.

A five-mile segment of SR 261 from the junction of SR 260 south toward Big Lake may be left open until Jan. 16, depending on the amount of snowfall.

State Route 273 between Sunrise Park and Big Lake will be closed Dec. 19.

ADOT reminds motorists to drive with caution this winter and offers these tips:

Slow Down. Drive defensively. Be patient and allow additional time for your trip.

Carry snow chains/cables in case highways are snow-packed and icy. Also be sure to pack a car safety kit that includes a cell phone.

Leave sufficient space between your vehicle and others. Give yourself plenty of room and time to stop to avoid upcoming hazards.

If stopped on the roadway, leave room for emergency vehicles to get around you.

Make sure your vehicle has plenty of fuel and pack extra clothing for winter weather. If you slide off the roadway, stay with your vehicle. The Department of Public Safety or ADOT will respond.

Check weather and road conditions before you leave. Let someone know your route.
